FISITA webinar explores the role of driver monitoring technology in vulnerable road user protection

Safety technology experts share insight into driver and occupant monitoring systems (DMS and OMS) ahead of an upcoming FISITA white paper

Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) and Occupant Monitoring Systems (OMS) will play an increasingly important role in automotive safety solutions. Using interior cameras, sensors and AI, DMS tracks attention and behaviour by monitoring eye gaze and blink rate, head position, signs of drowsiness, and distraction such as phone use.

Their effectiveness is such that they are becoming mandatory in some regions such as the European Union. DMS-OMS is also critical for ADAS and Level 2/Level 3 driving solutions to gauge driver attentiveness and readiness to take back control during hands-free driving.

In a recent FISITA webinar, experts from the FISITA Intelligent Safety Expert Group presented key takeaways from the group’s work on DMS-OMS technology.

Chaired by industry expert Dr Nick Reed, the webinar featured presentations from Applus+IDIADA and Bosch.

Tyler Warga is a Senior Product Manager in Bosch’s Cross-Domain Computing Solutions division, responsible for the global driver and occupant monitoring camera platform. James Jackson, Manager, Human Factors at Applus+ IDIADA, is a specialist in automotive human factors and ergonomics. Their presentations and the audience Q&A addressed the latest developments and outlook for DMS and OMS, including technology applications, the implications of new and future regulations, and why DMS and OMS are critical for protecting occupants and vulnerable road users (VRUs).

The title of the group’s upcoming white paper aligns with the title of this webinar: “DMS + OMS – the interior perspective: the future of driver and occupant monitoring systems for road vehicles”
